As a Cedar City family photographer I have been craving those photos that scream real life, candid, and genuine moments. But as a photographer how do we create those kinds of photos? Here are some of my biggest tips and tricks for creating and capturing candid moments during any of your family sessions.
First, never underestimate the power of a get to know you text. This is probably my biggest tip when it comes to family photography. It may seem like a small thing to do, but I promise it WORKS and it works WELL! Before every family session I love to text Mom and ask about her family, ask her to tell me about each kid, what their personalities are like, what they like to do, what she wants to remember about each of them. Then I like to have her tell me about her and her husband. This helps me not only run my session successfully, but it helps me know what prompts the family will most likely enjoy the most and therefore what prompts will help bring out those genuine candid moments.
Second, during a session read the vibe. If kids are jittering and needing to get energy out, I like to do more playful poses. If they are sad or maybe shy I like to give more cuddly prompts. If a prompt doesn't work don't waste a lot of time trying to "make it work". If it's not going as you planned move onto the next one.
Lastly, I like to take as much stress off of Mom during the photoshoot. If I can tell one of the kids is giving her stress I try to calm the situation, or maybe give said kid a break. Again read the room.
Photo sessions are more about giving a prompt instead of "perfectly posing" everyone and let me just tell you I am here for it! Candid real life moments are what I truly want to remember and what I want captured during my own family photos! Hopefully you find these tips helpful for your next session!
